Michael Dell's net worth sits near $268 billion, with almost all of it in stock rather than salary. His $3 million yearly pay is tiny next to $140-billion-plus equity stakes and tens of billions in diversified holdings.
Equity means shares he owns in public companies. Liquid wealth means cash, funds, and assets he can sell or spend quickly. Income means salary and annual pay.

What is his net worth right now?
Forbes put Dell at about $267.7 billion on Sept. 9, 2026. That $4.6 billion single-day gain tied to Dell Technologies stock moved him past Jeff Bezos into third place, according to USA Today in USA Today's Sept. 9 ranking report.
The number moved fast after that. Forbes later listed him at $276.4 billion after an $11 billion single-session jump, as Dell shares rose 6% to $570.72 on a reported $95 billion AI-server backlog, according to TheStreet in TheStreet's Sept. 29 market report. Bloomberg was lower and ranked him fifth at about $262 billion.
Why does salary matter so little?
Dell's fiscal 2025 total compensation was $3,092,256, up 2% from $3,030,405. It centered on a $950,000 base salary plus about $52,256 in other compensation.
That pay is rounding error next to equity swings. One strong stock day can add thousands of times his yearly salary.
- Fiscal 2025 total pay: $3,092,256
- Base salary: $950,000
- Sept. 9 one-day wealth gain: $4.6 billion

Where does the equity value come from?
The core is Dell Technologies. He held about 40.9%, or 265,674,689 shares, including 246,834,081 Class A and 18,840,608 Class C shares as of April 27, 2026. He holds roughly 22 million Broadcom shares from the VMware deal. Together with Dell stock, those shares form the backbone of the roughly $268.7 billion Forbes estimate. The VMware link is direct. For 169.3 million VMware shares in Broadcom's $69 billion VMware purchase closed Nov. 22, 2023, Dell received about $12 billion cash plus about 21 million Broadcom shares then worth about $21 billion.
How liquid is that wealth?
Most headline wealth is not cash. It is listed shares whose price moves daily with Dell Technologies and Broadcom. Spending power comes from sales, dividends, borrowing, and outside investments.
Diversification runs through DFO Management, formerly MSD Capital founded in 1998. The firm handles over $60-70 billion in assets across hotels and liquid corporate credit. SEC records show how paper wealth becomes cash, including 10 million Dell shares sold June 26, 2025 at $122.27 for $1.2 billion, according to StockTitan in StockTitan's Form 4 record.
