Who Is Oprah Winfrey? Oprah Net Worth, Harpo, OWN and WeightWatchers

Oprah Winfrey turned a 25-year talk show into Harpo, OWN and a long run on Forbes' billionaire lists. Here is the dated Forbes estimate, how the OWN sale and the WeightWatchers stake worked, and what the filings show.

Oprah Winfrey is the talk show host turned media owner whose production company, Harpo, sits behind The Oprah Winfrey Show, a string of films and the OWN cable network. On Oprah net worth, the most current published figure comes from Forbes: its real-time tracker put her at $3.4B on Oct. 27, 2026. That is a Forbes estimate, not a number Winfrey has disclosed.

Where it stands: Forbes last refreshed the written part of her profile on June 3, 2026, and the network she co-owns is still programming: on October 13, 2026, OWN announced the eighth year of its holiday movie lineup, according to the Warner Bros. Discovery pressroom.

Who is Oprah Winfrey?

Oprah Winfrey is an American broadcaster, producer and philanthropist best known for a daily talk show that, by Forbes’ account, ran for 25 years until 2011. Forbes’ profile notes that she was born to a teen mother in rural Mississippi and grew up without indoor plumbing. Forbes rates her fortune a 10 on its self-made score.

Her career did not stop with the show. Forbes describes how she turned it into a wider media business, and her company Harpo coproduced films including The Color Purple, Beloved and Selma.

How the Harpo money was made

The short answer: the show’s profits, kept and reinvested through her own company. That is how Forbes explains the base of her fortune.

Forbes puts a number on that core. It says the reinvested profits from the show, together with profits from the Harpo films, “add up to more than an estimated $2.8 billion.” That figure is Forbes’ estimate of one slice of her wealth, built up over decades. It is not her annual pay, and it is not the same thing as her total net worth.

A quick definition helps here. For Winfrey, net worth means the sum of her Harpo holdings, listed shares, land and cash, less any debts. Earnings are money coming in during a period. A large earnings history only becomes net worth to the extent it is kept and invested, which is why Forbes talks about “reinvested” profits.

OWN: from joint venture partner to a 5% stake

OWN is the cable channel Winfrey launched with Discovery. Warner Bros. Discovery’s pressroom says the network launched on January 1, 2011, and calls it “a joint venture between Harpo, Inc. and Warner Bros. Discovery” that also includes the Oprah.com website.

Over time, Winfrey sold most of her share. The steps, as reported by Next TV:

  • 2017: she sold part of her stake to Discovery for $70 million in cash, lifting Discovery’s interest from 49.5% to 73.99%.
  • 2020: a further transaction, valued at about $35 million according to people familiar with it, took Discovery’s stake to 95%. Winfrey was paid in Discovery shares rather than cash.
  • After the deal: Winfrey kept a 5% stake and stayed on as OWN’s CEO and chief creative officer, Next TV reported.

Next TV also reported that a securities filing showed Harpo intended to sell about 670,470 Discovery shares, half of what it received. Forbes’ profile summarizes the outcome the same way: she sold most of her OWN stake to the network’s owner in 2020 in exchange for shares in the company.

The WeightWatchers stake, start to finish

Winfrey’s most public stock market bet was on WeightWatchers, and it is documented from both ends.

The purchase. On October 19, 2015, the Associated Press, via The Christian Science Monitor, reported that she was “taking a 10 percent stake in Weight Watchers for about $43.2 million” and joining the board. The AP said that meant buying about 6.4 million shares. NPR member station GBH added that she also received options to buy an additional 5 percent stake.

The exit. In February 2024, WW International told regulators that Winfrey would not stand for re-election to its board at the 2024 annual meeting, Fox Business reported, citing the Securities and Exchange Commission filing. Citing LSEG data, Fox Business put her holding at 1.13 million shares, valued at $6.34 million on Jan. 1 that year, a far smaller holding than in 2015.

She did not sell those last shares. NPR, in a report carried by KPCW, said she would donate her stake and any future stock option proceeds to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington. WW stock fell around 25% in early trading after the announcement, NPR reported.

The board, according to NPR, said the donation would remove any perceived conflict of interest. For a net worth tally, the practical point is simple: since the 2024 gift, WeightWatchers stock is no longer part of her holdings.

Oprah net worth: what Forbes estimates and why the number moves

Forbes is the only major publication in our sources with a current, dated Oprah net worth figure: $3.4B on Oct. 27, 2026, from its real-time billionaires tracker.

Forbes says its real-time figure reflects changes since the close of the prior trading day, so it moves with the value of any listed shares she holds. Much of her fortune, though, sits in assets with no daily price, such as Harpo and property. Forbes says that property includes homes in California and over a dozen holdings, including 2,100 acres of land in Hawaii. Forbes has to estimate what those private assets are worth, so the total is an informed estimate rather than an audited balance sheet.

Two practical cautions follow. First, a stake sale changes the mix of her wealth more than the total: when she swapped most of OWN for Discovery stock, a private asset became a public one. Second, other outlets that quote a different Oprah figure may be repeating an older Forbes number; always check the date attached to it.

Philanthropy

Forbes says Winfrey has focused her giving on education, including a girls’ school in South Africa. Her giving also shows up in the public record in other ways. Forbes reported in August 2023 that she and Dwayne Johnson launched a $10 million relief fund for Maui residents. The 2024 WeightWatchers stock gift to the Smithsonian’s African American history museum was another documented donation. For a fellow entertainer’s very different path to wealth, see our profile of who Dwayne Johnson is and how he makes money, or compare with Michael Jordan’s Forbes billionaire profile.

OWN, the network Winfrey helped build, is in its eighth season of holiday films in 2026, per Warner Bros. Discovery’s pressroom.
